Tom Matsuda 5 (na) buwan ang nakalipas I remember, when I was a student who only knew about rock, Motown, folk, and some classical, walking past a nightclub one day and hearing this utterly amazing music inside. I stopped on a dime, walked in, and learned I was hearing a rehearsal by a band called Weather Report, which had just put out its first album. I bought a ticket to their show that night, and ended up going every night of their entire gig that week. (Back in those days, tickets were only about $10. Blew all of my savings, but it was totally worth it.) Every show was different, and every show was mind-blowing. I was so intrigued that I went to the library and read in Downbeat about Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter's histories, including their stints with Miles, and began to understand Miles' influence. The library had a great collection of jazz albums and a turntable with headphones, so I started listening. Kind of Blue was up first. My musical life was changed forever. I've listened to this album hundreds of times since, and it never gets old. Thank you Miles!
  • Bee Sherman
Bee Sherman 1 linggo ang nakalipas There was such a flowering of music, Mr. Matusda, between 1955-1975, that it was nigh on impossible to take it all in, and, believe you me, many people in those days, as you may well recall, had album collections that betrayed every evidence of them attempting to do that very thing!

kyle christenberry 3 (na) linggo ang nakalipas I, too have the first memory of hearing Miles Davis in a sushi bar in Vail in the early 1990's, but it was Someday My Prince Will Come. Weather Report was a daily listen along with Chick Corea years before that. Gifted musicians but didnt know the Miles connection to Zawinul and Shorter. This album never gets old.

I'm hooked. BTW Miles wrecked a Lamborghini Miura (look it up), damn damn DAMN shame but cool at the same time. Still hurts my heart...

  • Simon Sweeney
Simon Sweeney 4 (na) buwan ang nakalipas Tom. Great post. My experience was similar but not as romantic. Weather Report were the first jazz band to truly reel me in and I never stopped listening to jazz since. A mate of mine when I was a student had Black Market. I got all their entire output and saw the band three times. Once in San Sebastian in Spain I think it was 1982 - it was a shocking thing, but they only sold about 1500 tickets in a venue more than twice that. The local newspaper slagged off the town for its indifference remarking that just because the gig was not within the frame of the Jazz Festival people hadn't bothered to go. The gig incidentally was mind-blowingly good, one of the best and most memorable ever - for me at least. From a Weather Report beginning I got into Miles and Coltrane. Fabulous music. I was unlucky one night in Vicenza in 1986 I think it was - Miroslav Vitous was supposed to be playing with a trio in a tiny theatre (not the Olimpico) but the gig got cancelled because of a minor car crash en route. So many great musicians played with Weather Report... Jaco Pastorius too, Airto Moriera....such a wonderful band. I remember Wayne Shorter (whom I've seen three times since Weather Report - once in Sheffield - the opening number - he put the sax to his lips and just never stopped playing for twenty five minutes, nearly blew the roof off) was asked why Weather Report never played solos in their sets. He said 'We solo all the time, but all together'. What a man.

Erg Budster 5 (na) buwan ang nakalipas Tom, that reminds me of a story. Years and years ago when I was at university, my first wife and I were travelling across Canada from Vancouver to Halifax and back in a Volkswagen beatle. We had an eight track stereo that I dug up for the trip but we only had one tape: Weather Report. We listened to that tape over and over and over all the way across the country and back again. Ah, youth.

A Very ETV Special 5 (na) araw ang nakalipas usualsuspect1983 Video popularity is about more than viewcount to YouTube. If a video is watched for a longer amount of time by a viewer that figures into it too... many people leave this video on the whole hour whereas much more viewed/upvoted videos might be shorter and people don’t watch the whole thing/skim through it. In any case, this vid got claimed by the copyright holder so that’s why there’s ads on it now. The whole vid now essentially IS an ad for the album.

Obvious Troll. Yet you still got baited. Congrats 5 (na) buwan ang nakalipas Michael Nelson That’s a subjective statement, in the matter of music it’s all subjective in which is what the best album, for example I was watching Justice “cross” album and someone stated the Cross album By justice is the best of the best. • Robert Zeurunkl
Robert Zeurunkl 4 (na) buwan ang nakalipas With the resurgence in vinyl, I finally bought this album in a brand new pressing, at Wal-Mart of all places. There's all kinds of great stuff coming out (again) on vinyl. I've wanted this album for a LONG time, but I wanted my listening to be just like it was in 1979, the first time I ever played it on brand new vinyl. All the copies today, most are "well used", and have worn tracks, pops and hisses - which, charming as they may be, and offering a sort of "genuineness", aren't like brand new crystal clear. The record was really pretty heavy duty. A thick platter. and of course, in pristine condition. So, onto my 1974 Technics SL-1300 turntable it went, and out through my (Made in the U.S.A.) Kenwood JL-630w speakers came Miles Davis and his players. Beautiful music. What I like about Miles, and this album in particular, is that he doesn't dominate the whole performance. Each of the players contribute to the whole experience, and Miles doesn't get in their way, even though he is the "star" of the show. In fact, through the whole performance, Miles doesn't do most of the playing. They all contribute roughly equal time to the album. Miles doesn't take the "Rock Star" approach to his music, with squealing high notes, and fast fingering. Very laid back. But he doesn't focus on high notes and technical difficulty. It just kinda rolls out. Almost seeps out. It seems effortless. Like he was playing it while writing a letter to his mom back home at the same time. And his range stays in the "easy playing" range. Rarely breaking out of a High School jazz band trumpeters range. (And I know, that's what I was). It's not Maynard Fergusen. It's not Arturo Sandoval. It's not Wayne Bergeron. It's some Saturday night diner waitress at 3:00am in the morning on a corner in Brooklyn. It's the STYLE, not the range and technical prowess that makes this album..., well...., Kind of Blue. As for the production, it's amazing. They seem not to care if little imperfections slipped in. There's a spit valve gurgle at one point. John Coltrane starts a solo that is way too loud, and either the production engineer toned it back a bit, or John himself steps away from the mic a bit. It's all left in there. Purely organic. I read somewhere that the album used entirely first takes for each track, and that they all improvised on the music as none of them had even seen it before showing up at the studio to record it. Pure jazz magic.

  • 2gunshogun
2gunshogun 2 (na) buwan ang nakalipas (na-edit) Some of my earliest memories are of me as a baby crawling around on the floor while my parents listened to music. Lol, I still remember what the carpet looked like. That small apartment was a magical place for me. Jazz, R&B, a little blues, a little gospel, rock came later for me. They left me a treasure trove of music that reaches back to the forties. Great times.

  • Blue Eyed Soul Man
Blue Eyed Soul Man 5 (na) buwan ang nakalipas @Sara Arnold-Carrasco Jazz is deeper, involving more textures and feelings. Rock is more about aggression and rebellion. Some jazz has that too, but not as much and more variety. If people find themselves only listening to angry music there are some other emotions they may have missed. Sad, but people are really angry these days. This music might help them but they can't relate to it.
  • LameStudiosInc

  • Sara Arnold-Carrasco
Sara Arnold-Carrasco 5 (na) buwan ang nakalipas i grew up listening to rock, but early on in my late teens and 20s i developed a taste for jazz that my parents never seemed to have. jazz is the best thing that ever happened to my musical brain. Almost every style of music i love, which is most, is rooted in jazz. jazz is the heart of almost all music.
